Book Review: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

If you like Jordan Peele's Get Out or Leigh Bardugo's Ninth House, you are going to love this book. Mexican Gothic is Silvia Moreno-Garcia's latest release and it follows the story of Noemí Taboada as she travels to the mysterious, secretive & seemingly haunted High Palace to check on her cousin. Like her previous book, God of Jade & Shadow, Mexican Gothic is another masterpiece. This book has everything it needs. Great characters. Suspenseful plot. Beautiful writing.  Amazing. Amazing. Aamzing. That is really all I have to say about this book. I have nothing but praise for this book It's so freaking good and it utterly blew my mind. However, I would recommend not reading this book at night. I did and I got super, super paranoid and couldn't sleep for the rest of the night. Besides that, Moreno-Garcia has written the perfect horror-gothic novel and I am obsessed!!!

I think what really makes this book shine is the horror element of this book and the plot. Good horror is always ground in history and this book definately plays on that. This books has themes of colonialism, racism, and misogyny within it. What really makes this book scary is that it almost seems real. Like these types of things could really come to life in the real world. I'm not the biggest fan of horror but I LOVE this book. It made my skin crawl and my stomach churn but I literally could not peel my eyes off the page.

The plot of this book is mind blowing. It's so suspenseful and makes you want to keep reading. I read this book in one sitting. I was hooked and I could not look away.  Just when you thought you know where the story was going, it went somewhere else. Somewhere better and scarier. It was terrifying but also amazing.

Noemí was also a fun and great protagnist. She was clever, witty, and utterly fierce. She was never afraid to stand her ground or call out someone for craziness. Moreno-Garcia did a great job of balancing her spunk with key moments that displayed her vulnerability. I could literally feel her pain and her frustration through the pages and (Spolier) I was so glad to see her triumphant. I was really afriad this book would end like Rosemary's Baby but it didn't. I was literally crying in relief!!!

I love this book and I am definately going to read more of Silvia Moreno-Garcia's books. She is a master when it comes to story telling and this book proves it. I 100% give this book 5 Stars.

Be Warn this books does contains scenes that implicate rape.
