Tips On How to Read More
Tips on How to Read More
Growing up, adults have always complimented me on my ability to read so much. They always seemed so suprise that I can read over a 100 books each year. However, reading a lot of books isn't very difficult. It doesn't matter if you work a full time job or if you are a full time student. Or if you are a slow or fast reader. Anyone can read 50 or more books a year. Here are 5 tips that I used to help me read a 100 books a year.
1. Set a Certain Amount of Tip Each Day Just for Reading
If you want to read more, then you need to make it a priority. Like any other habit you want to complish, you need to take time out of your day just to read and to do it everyday. When I was in middle school and high school, I would always read during recess and lunch. It might sound nerdy but I always look forward for recess for this very reason. These days the only time I can read is before bed but I still look forward to it all the same. If you want to read more, then you need to make it a daily habit. Once you do, you'll easily burn through 50 or more books a year.
2. Bring a Book With You Wherever You Go
Growin up, I always carried a book with me. Sometimes it was a physical book. Other times it was a e-book on my tablet or phone. If I arrived early to class, I could spending my time reading instead of scrolling through social media. If I had any spare amount of time avaliable, I would simply pull out my book and start reading. Having a book with you wherever you go means you don't have an excuse not to read. Also, if you want to cut back on your screen time on your phone, this is a great way of doing that. Instead of scrolling aimlessly through social media, you can just read a book instead.
3. AudioBooks
According to ABC News, 220 million Americans average an hour and a half each day in their car. While most people blast music on their way to work, this is also a great time to read as well. Audiobooks have been on the rise these past few years and they're a great way to help you read more. Technically, you're listening to a book but I like to refer to it as reading with your ears. Audiobooks are great because even though you have do something with your hands you can still keep on track with your reading goals.
4. Don't Waste Your Time Trying to Finish Books You don't Want to Read
This is something I do a lot. If I start a book and find that I don't like it, then I won't bother trying to finish it. There's no point in wasting my time trying to finish a book I don't even like. I've tried to in the past but I always end up regretting it. I once checked out Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice at my local library but I could never get past the past few pages. So, ultimately, I just returned it and checked out another book that I was actually interested in (No offense to any Jane Austen fans out there but I'm not really into those types of books). Don't waste your time reading books you feel like you should read. Read the type of books that you actually want to read.
5. Focus on your Favorite Genres
If you look at my goodreads account, you will notice I read a lot of fantasy, romance, and historical fiction. These are not only my favorite genres but they're also the types of books I know I am going to finish. Occasionally, I'll read a Sci Fi book or something else. However, I mainly read these types of books because they excite me and they keep me entertained. They make me want to turn the page and keep reading. If you read the type of books that will excite you, then you won't have a problem finish a book.
