5 Book Tropes I Am Tired Of Seeing
As someone who reads frequently, I notice a lot of reoccuring themes and tropes in books. There are some that I do like. However, there are several that just get on my nerve. Here are 5 tropes that I am tired of seeing in any book. It doesn't matter if the book is YA or Adult. These book tropes need to go.
1.) Token Diversity
As a person of color, I find this trope extremely offensive and annoying. Just because you write your side characters as people of minorities this does not make your book diverse or woke. I am sick of seeing the Black or Asian or Gay best friends or side characters. The world is full of different races and sexualities and our books should reflect that. I am so glad that we are seeing more and more books where the people of color and different sexualities are telling their own stories and are not just the side characters.
2.) Love at First Site
I never bought this trope and personally, I don't know anyone in my real life who does. But yet so many books and movies keep incorporating this trope in their storylines. I don't get it. I understand being attracted to someone when you first meet them but thinking that they're your future partner and soulmate when you only known them for a short period of time is extremely unrealistic. Also, it's a little weird and disturbing when you really think about it.
3.) Emotional Abusive Bad Boys
I absolutely loathe this trope. This trope is disgusing and I am so sick of authors protraying abusive behavior (i.e emotional, verbal, or physical abuse) as romantic. It is not romantic. It's abuse and we should not try to romanticizie any such behavior. Books on Amazon Unlimted Kindle have a horrible habit of doing this and it is so annoying. Why Do Authors Keep Doing This? It is so annoying and frankly it's distrubing.
4.) Rape Not Being Properly Address in Books
I don't know if this is an actual trope but it's something I am noticing a lot in books. A character will be raped or sexually assulted in some way but it's never properly address in any sort of way. I noticed this in Tonya Bird's The Companion Series and other books too. I just find this trope both disappointing and sad as I strongly believe any sexual assaults of any kind should not go unaddress. Even in books.
5.) Love Triangle
Thanks to Twilight, books, regardless of genres, have become obsessed with this trope AND I AM SO OVER IT. Why does this trope keep popping up? Why? It's not even a original trope and frankly, it acutally adds very little to the plot or the book in generally. The only Love Triangle I have ever liked was Mark, Kieran, and Cristina in the Dark Artifices. And if you have read that series (and you should) you would understand why. But, yeah, I don't like this trope and I think it's time we should let it go.
