Book Review: House of Earth & Blood by Sarah J. Maas
Book Review: Sarah J. Maas's House of Earth & Blood
Does anyone else have a problamtic relationship with her books? Because I definitely do. Her books got me into YA and originaly, Throne of Glass was one of my all time favorite series. I even have a whole shelf full of Sarah J Maas's books. However, I do acknowledge that the majority of her characters are very white and very straight. In her latest releases, she has been including more diversity in her books as well as address some of her other problamtic tropes that she favors to write about. I have to say that House of Earth & Blood is a major improvement and maybe one of her best novels so far. However, with that said, this book was simply not for me.
House of Earth & Blood follows the story of Bryce Quinlan, a half fae, as she goes on a journey to avenge the death of her best friend. With the help of a handsome, brooding fallen angel name Hunt, of course. This books has faeries, witches, angels, vampires shape-shifters, magic, and cell phones. House of Earth & Blood is a mix of high fantasy and science fiction. This is by far her most complex and confusing world she has ever written so far. Therefore, there is a lot of world building to establish. This means there is a lot of info dumping throughout this book. Like a lot. Like it feels there is info dumping every chapter. This is my main problem with this book. There is so much info dumping in this book. It was just too much for me even though I like what I was learning. I think it just slowed down the pace of this novel and made it less enjoyable for me.
Overall, House of Earth & Blood is a good book. It's not my favorite book of hers (ACOTAR is my favorite series by her, mostly because of Lucien who is my baby) but there was a lot of things that I did like. I love how important female friendship is in this book. Bryce was a fun protagnist to follow around. I really like her brother and their sibling relationship. I also like how Sarah J. Maas comments on her own past mistakes in this book.
For the most part, I would say House of Earth & Blood is a really good book. However, it just wasn't for me. I like Sarah J Maas as author for the most part. She is a really good author and she has grown a lot since Throne of Glass. I like this book and I would recommend it for the most part. This book is a solid 3 out of 5 stars for me.
